To accelerate the widespread adoption of low-carbon and energy-saving technologies in China's phosphate chemical industry and to eliminate barriers to their implementation, the Facilitating Cleaner and Energy Efficient Phosphate Chemicals Industry in China Project (PhosChemEE) was inaugurated in Guiyang, Guizhou on March 28. The Global Environment Facility supports the project, with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) serving as the international implementing agency. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China and the Ministry of Natural Resources of China act as domestic implementing agencies. The project encompasses policy development, technology promotion, information sharing, and awareness-building within China's phosphate chemical industry, including phosphate ore mining and refining, phosphate chemical production, and managing by-products and waste from these processes.
Industrial phosphates are crucial in manufacturing fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, high-tech products, and more, making them indispensable and growing components of the modern global economy. However, phosphate mining, phosphate chemical refining, and the inefficient use of phosphate industry by-products are significant carbon emissions and energy waste sources. China is the world's largest producer, consumer, and exporter of phosphate chemical products. In 2019 alone, China's phosphate chemicals production generated 59 million tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the emissions of 12.7 million cars. Against this backdrop, reducing the environmental impact and energy consumption of energy-intensive industries like the phosphate chemical industry is essential.
Ms. Beate Trankmann, Resident Representative of UNDP China, stated that China's dedication to building a more sustainable economy is crucial to supporting global efforts to combat the climate crisis. As the world's largest industrial nation, China's decarbonization of industrial processes is vital to developing a low-carbon, future-oriented economy. In addition, enhancing energy efficiency is critical to shrinking carbon footprints and hastening the green transition in energy-intensive sectors.
At the PhosChemEE launch conference, experts from various fields emphasized the significance of pre-concentration and ore sorting technology for energy savings in phosphate resource management. Implementing ore sorting technology at the beginning of the phosphate chemical industry chain - during the phosphate mining and mineral processing stage - can boost the utilization rate of phosphate resources, minimize resource waste, and promote energy-efficient production.
As a leader in China's ore sorting field, HPY Technology is committed to energy conservation, carbon reduction, and sustainable development in the mining industry, with proven applications in various phosphate mines. HPY Technology's Vice President, Shuhao Zhou, was an invited speaker at the PhosChemEE launch conference. He shared insights on the energy-saving and emission-reduction practices of HPY Technology's ore sorting technology.
The PhosChemEE Project has a five-year implementation period and will showcase energy-saving, sustainable, low-carbon applications in phosphate chemical industry clusters such as Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Hubei. The project aims to accelerate the eco-friendly transformation of China's entire phosphate chemical industry chain by enhancing systems and fostering innovation. HPY Technology will also promote energy-efficient production of phosphate mineral resources and the sustainable development of the phosphate chemical industry, supporting all stakeholders in transitioning to a low-carbon economy, collectively building a more sustainable and inclusive future, hastening the realization of a shared vision of net-zero emissions, and advancing the goals of the global climate agenda.
