The International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) is one of the leading academic conferences in the field of artificial intelligence. It is organized by the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI); hosted by the Macao Association of Convention, Exhibition & Tourism Sectors; and co-organized by Shenzhen University, WeBank, Guangdong Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Economy (SZ). The conference aims to bring together a wide range of Chinese researchers and industrial practitioners within the artificial intelligence industry. By sharing theoretical and technological advances in artificial intelligence, they will promote collaboration, integration, and innovation.
How does AI Change The World?
The IJCAI conference selected nearly 120 cutting-edge academic papers in the field of artificial intelligence and held three forums: Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change, Artificial Intelligence Model Audit and Regulation, and Privacy Computing and Federal Learning. In addition to bringing together top scholars in AI, the organizing committee also invited representatives of leading companies in healthcare, ecological protection, the mining industry, smart cities, carbon finance, and other industries representing applications of AI technology in their respective industries, to attend the conference. Dr. Wu Haishan, chairman of the conference organizing committee, said that cross-border exchange between academia and different industries would promote the expansion and extension of the AI field and allow AI to create a significant value around the globe.
Creating Awareness
Vice President of HPY Technology, Mr. Shuhao Zhou, delivered a keynote speech on how the mining industry uses AI to combat climate change. He asserted that, according to the China Geological Survey, more than 95% of energy, 80% of industrial raw materials, and 70% of human agricultural resources today are derived from mining. A report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that the global battery and mineral supply chain will need to expand tenfold to meet mineral demands in 2030. The World Bank, in 2020 Minerals for Climate Action: Mineral Intensity of the Clean Energy Transition to 2050, stated that the world would need to consume more than 3 billion tons of new energy, minerals, and metals. And the minerals sector accounts for 8% of total global CO2 emissions. As an industry, mining produces a significant amount of carbon dioxide and has a significant environmental impact.
Staying Ahead of the Curve
As a national high-tech enterprise with more than 110 patents, HPY Technology has been forging ahead in technology development and product innovation since its establishment. In addition, it is pushing for ways to use AI to combat climate change and positively impact the world. HPY Technology developed China’s first ore AI classification algorithm, the Wenshu Algorithm, a pioneering application of deep learning theory to the mining industry. It creates an adaptive ore sorting model that can track and optimize the algorithm online in real-time based on changes in the ore grade. In complex ore sorting environments, the structure of the ore sorting model can adapt to accommodate different characteristics, such as ore size, texture, luster, and thickness, to separate ore from waste rock accurately.
Creating a Good Global Impact
As of November 2021, approximately one hundred mines have benefited from HPY Technology’s intelligent ore sorting solutions. It is estimated that HPY Technology’s sensor-based intelligent ore sorting machines have:
- Conserved 516 million tons of water
- Reduced energy consumption by more than 30%
- Saved 140 million kWh oz electricity
This equals a reduction of around 139 million kilograms of carbon dioxide and the planting of 6.96 million trees.
Building for the Future
In addition, HPY Technology’s participation in the 31st International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence-China was a strong case for why AI technology in the mining industry can help combat climate change and the importance of maximizing mineral resource utilization to help create a positive impact on the environment. HPY Technology will continue to develop the application of AI technology and provide mining enterprises with AI ore sorting solutions that maximize economic and social benefits. It will also assist mining enterprises in achieving a complete transformation into an enterprise that supports environmentally friendly processes while maintaining sustainable growth.
